Food & Dining in Syria

There are numerous restaurants in Aleppo and Damascus serving a variety of Oriental and European dishes. Fresh fruit juices are available from street stalls in most towns.

The Art House Damascus roof top restaurant is an excellent restaurant for western food with a stunning view of Damascus. Also, Ahla Talleh Restaurant, which is situated on Mount Kausion overlooking Damascus, is popular with locals and foreigners, serving both local and western food.

Table service is the norm and a meal is paid for afterwards. There are bars serving a wide range of alcoholic drinks. Local beers include Al-Sharq, brewed in Aleppo, and Barada, from Damascus. Alcohol is permitted but restrictions are imposed during Ramadhan when it is illegal to drink in public from dawn to dusk, even for non-Muslims.

Tipping is often expected, especially in more expensive establishments; 10% is generally acceptable.
